Dr. Carlo Alberto Bersani

Dr. Carlo Albert Bersani, 86, passed away September 24, 2015.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Carlo had lived in Tallmadge since 1965.  He served in the U.S. Army and retired in 1993 from The University of Akron with 28 years of service. 

Carlo joined The University of Akron in 1965 after teaching at Winona State and Drake Universities.  He holds a Ph.D. from Iowa State University, an M.A. from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. from Eastern Michigan University.  He was one of the key figures in the establishment of modern sociology program at Akron and was centrally involved in the development of the Akron-Kent Joint Ph.D. program, the M.A. program, and the undergraduate degree programs in law enforcement and corrections.  Carlo served four years as head of the Department of Sociology (1976-1980).  His expertise in criminology was expressed in many important ways.  His book on crime and delinquency was a very popular text nationally during the 1970’s.  He is the author of many research articles and scholarly presentations on various aspects of crime and deviance. His classes in criminology, corrections, juvenile delinquency, and deviance were central to the department’s curriculum.  He also worked closely with local law enforcement agencies, correctional agencies, courts, and intervention centers. Until 2000, he continued to work part time for The University of Akron.

He is a member of Our Lady of Victory Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Eufamia Bersani and brother, Anthony Bersani.

Carlo is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol; daughters, Lisa Bersani of Tallmadge and Michele (Mark) Stasitis of Akron; grandchildren, Anderson and Harper Stasitis; sisters, Camilla, Viola, and Yolanda Bersani all of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan; six nieces and nephews; sister in law, Joan Bersani of Harper Woods, Michigan; and brother in law, James (Lori) Ufkes of Carthage, Illinois.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be held at Tallmadge Cemetery.
