Obituary

Anna Sue Katanic (Polefrone) Sue Katanic, age 94, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014.   Born on December 21, 1919  to Italian immigrants Phillip and Catherine (Bolognue) Polefrone, Sue was one of nine children.  She spent all of her childhood and most of her adult life on North Hill.  Born on Lods Street, Sue grew up above her father's neighborhood grocery store on East Cuyahoga Falls Ave.  Early lessons of thrift and hard work remained with Sue throughout her life.  One of her proudest accomplishments was owning and maintaining a nice house in her favorite part of town. Sue was socially active all her life and loved to spend time with family and friends.  Being one of nine children, she learned early the fun of large gatherings and spent many hours at her parents' dining room table playing every possible variation of poker with her parents, siblings and their spouses and later their children.  The family's love of gambling evolved into an annual trip to Las Vegas for all the brothers and sisters that occurred for many years.  A neighborhood coffee klatch socialite, Sue took a break from household chores around noon every Monday through Friday for nearly 50 years to have coffee with a group of housewives in the neighborhood.  Conversation ranged from their children's accomplishments and exploits, to politics, and often to harmless neighborhood gossip.    Sue was a member of the Dean Heights Club, an active member and officer of the Patterson Park Seniors and Patterson Park Singers, and a member of the Saint Monica Society. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband of 42 years, Nick.  She was also preceded in death by brothers Nick and Phil Polefrone and by sister Vivian Patrino.  Sue is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Joe and Diana of Sparks, Nevada, and Nick and Maureen of Bath, and by grandson James.  She is also survived by brothers and sisters Joe and Frank Polefrone and Elizabeth Hill, Amelia Dallas, and Rita Grescovich, special niece Cheryle Franks, and by many other nieces, nephews and cousins. The family thanks the staff of the Village of St. Edward for the excellent and loving care Sue received as a resident there. Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 26, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Hennessy Funeral Home (formerly Rossi) 552 N. Main St. Akron followed by Mass of the Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 83 Mosser Pl.
