Cheryl Lee Funk

December 17, 1961 — March 28, 2026

Tallmadge

Cheryl Lee Koons Funk went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 28, 2026, a welcoming place to be, free of the toil and confines of diabetes that she had lived with for a lifetime.

Cheryl – “Chey”, “Leenie”, Cher Bear, was born December 17, 1961 to Robert and Jennifer Koons in Akron, Ohio. She resided there with her family, enjoying childhood in the West Akron area, and attended Church of the Good Shepherd (formerly Calvary United Methodist) in Akron, making friends and many memories. She moved with her family to Williamsport, MD in 1975 and graduated from Williamsport Hight School in 1980. She then attended York College of Pennsylvania, obtaining a degree in Healthcare Management, and began her career in Medical Records at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. After a period of time, she moved further south to Beckley, WV and met her husband to be, Gene Funk, married and shortly thereafter moved to Vermont. They spent 4 years there, adopted their son, Alex Funk, and then returned to Ohio and resided in Tallmadge, OH. She continued her career in the Medical records field at Regency Hospital, Summit County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Until the closure of the facility) and completed her career at Akron General Cleveland Clinic Hospital.

Cheryl never met a stranger, was generous and fun-loving and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She liked to bake and cook (a very meticulous “dicer”) and share her results with friends and family. She also enjoyed listening to music of many genres, gardening, reading, playing cards and board games, completing puzzles (jigsaw and pen/paper), and her dogs, of which she had many over her lifetime. She was a member of the Tallmadge Methodist Church, and avid sports fan, enjoying watching many teams, but remained an unwavering Cleveland Brows fan, joining her siblings on the “Sibs Football Feed” to cheer, and groan, through the years.

She is preceded in death by infant son, Griffith Jordan Funk; parents, Robert and Jennifer Koons; grandparents and uncles.

Cheryl is survived by husband, Gene Funk; son, Alex; siblings, Kris (Chad) McCully of Ohio, Craig (Christina) Koons of Maryland, Valerie (Jon) Pensinger of Pennsylvania; mother-in-law, Emilie Wilber; sisters and brothers-in-law, aunts, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins.

Funeral service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to the American Diabetes Association, 4500 Rockside Road #440, Independence, OH 44131.
