Pop, 93, passed away November 23, 2017. Born to Edith Canavan "Aunt Edie" on November 8, 1924, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where he graduated in January 1943 to join the War Effort. He earned his Purple Heart and other commendations during the "Battle of the Bulge". Pop was honored for being the last survivor of the 82nd Airborn Div. of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Acker-Moore VFW Post #3733. He retired from Ohio Edison in 1984 with 35 years of service and continued work at Stow-Kent Lanes, where he taught thousands of children how to bowl.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley and first wife, Meryl; son, Donald Lee Canavan and Robert Meffert; his hero, Bryan Large; parents, JJ and Alice Canavan.
Pop is survived by his sons, David (June) Canavan, James (Barbara) Canavan, Joel Canavan; brothers, Larry, Bruce (Sue) Large, Gaylord, Patrick, Curtis Meffert; nine grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 29, 2017, at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery 10175 Rawiga Rd, Rittman, Ohio. There will be a celebration of Pops life at 5:00 p.m. Friday at Acker Moore VFW Canteen, 3733 Fishcreek Road, Stow, Ohio.
