Donald Earl Scherer

Donald Earl Scherer, aged 90 years and 144 days, passed away peacefully on September the first with family by his side.

Dad was preceded in death by his father, Claude; his mother, Grace; an infant brother, Dennis; his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret; and his grandson, Cory.

He is survived by his sons, Steven (Diana) and Brian (Shelby); sister, Karen (Bill) Spurrier; brother, Bruce (Susan); seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, plus many loving relatives, friends, and neighbors.

Dad was born on April 10, 1935. He spoke fondly and often of his younger years, being raised just off Tallmadge Circle. He spent those years hunting, fishing, trapping, right in the Tallmadge area. As he grew older, he set pins by hand at the local bowling alley. He graduated from Tallmadge High School and after a brief stint working at the Ravenna Arsenal, he began what would become 31 years working at the Ford plant in Walton Hills.

He married our Mom, the love of his life, in 1956 and settled in north Akron. Dad was fortunate to retire at the age of 51, and he and Mom spent many great years together, inseparable, wintering in Florida and summering in Akron. You wouldn't see one without the other close by.

Mom and Dad loved flea markets and yard sales, as evidenced by a visit to Dad's basement. In his later years, Dad enjoyed Fords, planting too many tomato plants and too much kale, giving away the fruits of his garden, and making sure all the flowers around the house and yard were in tip top shape.

Visitation will be 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2025 at the Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (On the Historic Tallmadge Circle).

Funeral service will follow visitation at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Hillside Memorial Park.
