Ellen Elaine Hughes, 96, passed away at home peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 22, 2025. She was born in Akron and lived in Tallmadge since the age of 9.
Ellen was a licensed cosmetologist and owned her own beauty shop until 1993. She was a member of Tallmadge United Methodist Church serving as a Sunday School teacher and choir member. Ellen was a member of the Homemakers and Trowel and Trellis Garden Clubs, and the Tallmadge Garden Forum. She was an adviser for a homemaking and sewing 4-H Club. Ellen was the Summit County 4-H queen in 1947. She loved animals and had many faithful companions throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Richard; parents, Earl and Anna Baker; and brother Earl D Baker.
Ellen is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Donald) Allebach of Tallmadge; son, Richard E. (Vicki) Hughes of Cuyahoga Falls; grandchildren, Emily Ross (Putter Hicks), Donnie (Monica) Allebach, Annie and Dennis Allebach; great-grandchildren, Ricky, Savannah Allebach, Madison, Morgan and Mallory Ross, Macie Hicks; and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to her hospice's care team for their love and support. The visits from Chaplin Bill Ihde and Pastor Scott Low were appreciated and comforting.
Visitation will be Monday, July 28, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Tallmadge United Methodist Church, 270 N. Munroe Ave., Tallmadge.
Funeral service will follow at the church with Reverend Scott Low officiating.
Interment will be at Tallmadge Cemetery.
