Jerry P. Shanafelt

Jerry P. Shanafelt, 98, passed away peacefully at Aultercare in Hartville, Ohio on September 12, 2025.

He lived his whole life in Suffield, Ohio and worked for Goodyear Aerospace where he retired after 35 years of service. While employed with Goodyear, he worked as an electrical technician. Jerry was involved in the Goodyear Blimp operations where he spent time in England and Italy. He served as the camera man and night sign operator on the blimp covering sporting events.

Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Owen Shanafelt; mother, Susan Shanafelt his brother, Richard Shanafelt; twin sister, Mary Donohoe; and his daughter, Lori Miller.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Sue Shanafelt; his sons, Rand and Jeffrey (Karen) Shanafelt; and step-daughter, Lynn (John) Slomsky. Jerry is also survived by granddaughter, Angela (Alex) Miller-Stoica; grandson, Nicholas (Crystal) Miller; and step-grandchildren, Alexa (Eli) Cowan, and Jack (Brooke) Slomsky. He is also survived by many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Jerry and Sue treasured their yearly time spent in Hilton Head where they made good friends and enjoyed a long break from the harsh Ohio winters. He also enjoyed golfing and vegetable gardening. He was especially proud of his tomatoes.

Jerry's faith was very important to him, as he was a devoted member of the Suffield United Church of Christ. He often donated his time there by serving on committees and the consistory at the church. Jerry contributed to the long and rich history of the Shanafelt name through his service and love for his family and community. He lived a very full and active life, and he will be greatly missed by many.

A private memorial service will be held for family and friends at a later date.
