John William Patrick, Jr., age 77, of Tallmadge, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on March 27, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Pittsburgh, John grew up in Dorseyville, PA, and, like his father who served in WWII, enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. He attended college in downtown Pittsburgh before relocating to Ohio in 1970 for a job at a civil engineering and land surveying firm. John later became a registered professional land surveyor and established Buckeye Surveying, which he operated from Tallmadge until his retirement in 2012. He was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church.
John will always be remembered for his gentle and soft-spoken manner, his support and care for his family, and his unwavering work ethic. As a small business owner he devoted countless hours of meticulous detail to his profession. His greatest joy came from supporting and caring for those closest to him. He loved spending time with his sons, doing everything from attending sporting events to concerts to car shows. He moved his mother Rose from Pennsylvania to live with him the last 10 years of her life following her Alzheimer's diagnosis, enriching her life with travel and demonstrating unwavering patience.
Weekends often found John cheering on his favorite teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians, as well as NASCAR, PGA, and following the Tour de France each summer. Always scouring food websites for new recipes to try and share with family, John loved food; from grilling sausage, to crockpot roasts, Slovak favorites, and searching for the best fried fish sandwich "in tahn." As a founding member of the Tallmadge Men's Garden Club, he took great pleasure in growing vegetables, especially nurturing his beefsteak tomatoes and yellow peppers for stuffing with sausage. Other passions included traveling (such as classic car events, cruises, Blue Ridge Parkway, the Grand Canyon, California, Cooperstown, and Ireland), attending local classic car shows, and birdwatching—he loved observing the numerous bird feeders outside his home and particularly enjoyed the bright red cardinals that frequented his window feeder.
Even in his later years, while battling Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, John faced his health challenges with quiet dignity and without complaint. He was supported by a circle of patient family who encouraged his independence and provided loving care.
John was preceded in death by his father, John Sr., mother Rose, and first wife, Jane (Coroian). He is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Marie, and his three sons: John III of Tallmadge, Robert (Adrianne) of Wadsworth, and Tom of Pittsburgh. His legacy lives on through beloved grandson Henry, as well as stepsons and step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at St. Eugene Parish, 1821 Munroe Falls Avenue, Cuyahoga Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m., with Fr. Pete Coletti officiating. A reception will follow the service. Interment will take place at Tallmadge Cemetery at a later date.
