IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John "Jack"
Selby
May 30, 2024
John "Jack" A. Selby, 72, passed away May 30, 2024 as a result of an accident while riding his bicycle.
Jack spent most of his life in Firestone Park and graduated from Garfield High School '70. He retired as a meat cutter from Acme.
His love for baseball ran deep… having coached many players in Firestone Park from T-ball to High School and even doing a stint as the Hot Stove Firestone Park league commissioner, he had a lasting and positive impact on the youth in the community.
An avid outdoorsman, on any given day you could find him outside doing something. As his focus and interests changed and adapted to life, he would coach baseball, including his son JD, throughout the spring and into mid-summer, ending the summer with his annual camping trip with his daughter, Melissa.
He was also a competitive trap shooter, a great pistol and rifle shooter, a hunter, a fisherman, a dirt bike rider, a Jeeper & off-roader, a swimmer, a scuba diver, a wrestler, a softball player, and much more.
As he got older, he would shore fish multiple bodies of water but mostly Nimisila Reservoir and was always seen with his lil morkie, Itsy, before she passed on. After retirement , he always looked forward to his Sunday drives with his wife Willie. After her passing, his true love became riding his bicycle on the various trail systems in the local area, including the Towpath and stopping to fish the canals and streams that often ran alongside them. What started as a way for him to stay in shape and manage his type 2 diabetes, became a passion that took him all over northeast Ohio, a month in various areas of Florida, Lake Mead in Nevada, and even became the self proclaimed mayor of the Indian Creek Trail out in Kansas & Missouri. Though taken from us early with a lot left to give, he always lived life to the fullest, and passed away doing what he loved.
If you met Jack once, you gained a friend for life. He will be remembered for his endless trove of stories, his unwavering support for those closest to him, and an unbelievable acumen for practical jokes.
Jack was preceded in death by wife, Wilda "Willie" Selby (McElhaney), parents, John & Marion (Ondecker) & twin sister Jill Selby.
He is survived by son, John "JD" Selby; daughter, Melissa (Michael) Evers; brothers, Stephen & James (Kim) Selby; grandchildren, David & Joe Evers, Caroline & John Selby and their mom, Libby; and more friends than we could ever list.
Celebrations of Jack's life will be scheduled at a later date.
