Louis J. Contessa
Stow- Louis J Contessa, 83, Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather went to be with the Lord on July 26, 2015 surrounded by his loving family after a recent and brief battle with lung cancer.
Lou was born on January 22, 1932 in Akron OH. He graduated from North High School, playing basketball, baseball and a master pole vaulter (per brother Tony). Lou was an Army veteran who served in Korea and participated in active combat while there. Lou worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 43 years. After retirement his fun job(s) were at Green Hills Golf Course and Stow Kent Family Center.
He enjoyed family gatherings, casino bus trips, attending Woodridge Athletic events and watching volleyball at Stow Kent Family Center. He was also an avid Bowler and Golfer through the years. Lou also was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3529. Lou also was a man who loved his tomatoes and Italian bread.
Lou was preceded in death by Parents, Antonio and Maria (Sebastiano) Contessa; Brother, Matthew Contessa; Sister, Mary (Contessa) Campbell; and Son-in-law, John Mitchell.
Lou is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Joyce (Barbour) Contessa; loving daughters, Connie (Tom) Alexander, Cathy Mitchell, Cyndi (Dan) Montoney and Chrissi D'Avello; Grandchildren, Marissa (Jeff) Eink, Kristin (Tom) Sliwinksi, Adam and Zach Bickel, Jake and Alex D'Avello; and Great-Granddaughter, Lilliana Sliwinski; Step-Grandchildren, Dalton, Donny and Megan Montoney; Lifelong friends, Al and Mary Musci, Paul and the late Diana Kodish.
The family would like to thank the staff at Akron City Hospital's ICU unit for the comfort they gave to Louis and family the last four days of his life.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday (7/30/15), at Blessed Trinity Church, 300 East Tallmadge Ave, Akron, Ohio. Entombment will follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Family and Friends will be received from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Wednesday (7/29/15), at Hennessy Funeral Home (Corner of York and Main), 552 North Main St., Akron, OH.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Woodridge Athletics' Booster Club or the Knights of Columbus Council 3529 Charity Fund.
