Maude Nancy Williams, 100, passed away May 27, 2023. Born June 21, 1922 in the Tremont area of Sevier County, Tennessee, what would later become part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. She never forgot her country roots.
Maude was married to John "Tennessee" Williams for 52 years. During World War II. John served in the Naval Air Corp. While station at Alameda Air Base. Maude worked on base as a messenger delivering mail, riding a scooter between the naval base buildings. Maude started her career with the City of Akron Parks and Recreation Department at Mason Park in 1966. Maude saw the need for more activities for older adults and pushed city leaders for funding. She started 13 neighborhood clubs and recreation centers across the city, including the Kenmore Senior Center. Later, Maude would become the first coordinator for older adults with the City of Akron Recreation Bureau in 1979, adding even more organizations and clubs for seniors to enjoy. Many of those clubs are still going to this day. Maude retired at the age of 70. On the date of her retirement the mayor of Akron declared February 29, 1992 as "Maude Williams Day." Retirement didn't slow her down. She served on the mayor's Senior Citizens Commission for many years. She was a lifetime member of many organizations. She was a Green AARP charter board member. She served as their travel chairperson until the age of 90 travelling on many great trips from day bus trips to overseas adventures. Maude was a 30-year member of Stow Alliance Fellowship.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Tennessee" Williams; parents, Ashley and Zora (Shular) Perryman, five brothers and sisters.
Maude is survived by; daughters, Rhonda (Williams) Graham, Sandra (Williams) Charnovic son, Thomas (Sherrie) Williams; brother, Omer Perryman, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 3, 2023, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave, Tallmadge, Ohio 44728, followed by funeral service with Pastor Phil Chapman officiating.
