Obituary

Walter Henry Cahill, Jr. died peacefully and surrounded by loving family on April 13, 2016 in Akron, Ohio at the age of 95. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Geraldine Cahill; sisters Louise Cahill and Mary McCourt; his children Paul Cahill, David Cahill, and Monica McJunkin; their spouses Beth Cahill, Adelaide Aime and Kevin McJunkin; grandchildren, Diana Cahill, Alexander Cahill, Adam McJunkin, Thomas McJunkin, Colleen Cahill, and Mitchell Cahill; and many loving nieces and nephews and family friends. His family thanks niece Mary Lore and family friend George Donaldson for all their loving support of Walter and Gerry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Gertrude (McShaffrey) Cahill and sisters, Janice Richardson, Marjorie Watson, and Gertrude Ahern. Walter stated that his life started when he met Gerry in 1957 at a Catholic singles group that met at St. Bernard's Church in downtown Akron. They married in 1958 at St. Martha Church. Walter was born November 2, 1920 in Akron, Ohio and attended school at St. Sebastian's and Akron's John R. Buchtel High School, graduating in 1938. He lived in Chicago from 1938 to 1939 and returned to Akron to enroll in the economics program of The University of Akron. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Walter enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was deployed to Italy at the Salerno and Anzio beachheads. After military service, he worked at the family plumbing company until starting a job as a machinist at Bridgewater in Akron, Ohio in 1951. He completed an education degree from The University of Akron in 1961 and a degree in special education from Kent State University in 1964. He had a long career in teaching with the Akron Public Schools. He taught history at Goodyear Junior High School and transferred to teaching special education at Akron East High School in 1964 where he had many friends and heated games of hearts. Walter was a dedicated teacher who helped countless students make their way in the world. He enjoyed traveling with Gerry, visiting with his children and grandchildren, and was an avid reader with a great love of history. He had a wonderful sense of humor that livened many gathering and meals with family and friends. Visitation will be held at Hennessy Funeral Home (corner of York and Main), 552 N. Main St., Akron, TODAY, April 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 16, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Church, 300 E. Tallmadge Ave., Akron, Rev. Joseph Warner will officiate the ceremony. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, with a reception to follow.
