James Klabbatz Obituary

James A. Klabbatz, 86 of Suffield, said goodbye to his family and friends, passing away peacefully on February 13, 2021.

Jim was born in Detroit on Sept. 16, 1934. He is survived by his wife, Marilynn (Sammy nee Steagall); his children, Christopher (Estrella) of Columbus and Kenneth (Sherry) of Memphis; step-children Catherine (Sammy) Brennan of Akron, Michael Sammy of Cuyahoga Falls, Renee (Sammy) Kaufman (Doug) of Tallmadge; sister-in-law Gemarice Fisher of Detroit, twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William and Adeline (Basset) Klabbatz; his first wife, Beverly (Conaway) Klabbatz; daughter, Sherry (Klabbatz) Fazio; and brother, Richard Fisher (Detroit).

Jim began his business career at age 18 as a pole climber with Ohio Bell. After being drafted into the U.S. Army, he served as a communications technician in Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Ohio Bell, eventually retiring from AT&T in upper management after 35 years.

He was an outstanding basketball player at Tallmadge High School, graduating in 1952, and continued to love Tallmadge youth and high school sports, Ohio State athletics, as well as the Cleveland Cavs, Browns and especially Indians.

An avid woodworker and electronics whiz, Jim was a friend to all who met him and will be missed terribly. Special thanks to the Suffield Fire Department and the Palliative Care nurses at Akron Summa hospital, especially Andy and Don.

At Jim’s request (and due to COVID restrictions) there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life and memory will be held at a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Suffield Fire Department, 1256 Waterloo Rd, Mogadore, OH 44260.
