Norma Jean (Giles) Christy

Norma Jean (Giles) Christy, 77, passed away the evening of April 19, 2021. Born in Copley, she lived most of her life in Tallmadge and particularly enjoyed her twenties spent in Highland Square.

After nearly forty years of well-respected work as the highest level of Executive Secretary at Ohio Edison, Norma embraced the calmer pace that retirement allowed. She became an active member of the James Dean fan club, laughed with her yoga group, traveled to visit family, and devoured films old and new. She was a lifelong Cleveland Indians fan but had soft spots for Micky Mantle and George Brett. Her passion for music began in the fifties then blossomed in the sixties and seventies, but she continued to discover unique voices from Rodriguez to Morrissey in later years. Norma introduced her daughter to the Black Keys with their first album.

Her favorite car was her 1970 MG convertible and her favorite color blue. On the beach surrounded by seagulls or in the backyard surrounded by deer were two of her favorite places, but she also spent countless hours cheering on her daughter through high school and beyond. Norma developed a love of poetry while taking night classes at the University of Akron, and it was poetry spoken aloud that accompanied her passing.

Family was incredibly important to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gib and Edna Giles; her sisters, Margaret Tejral and Linda Mellen; her brother, Kenneth Giles.

Norma is survived by her daughter, Leigh Christy, of Los Angeles; her brother, Glenn Giles; brother- and sister-in-laws Bob Tejral, Penny Giles, and JoAnn Giles; a dozen beloved nieces and nephews; and her rescue cat, Sweet Pea.

Visitation and Funeral service will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday, April 25 at Donovan Bagnoli Funeral Home at 339 Southwest Avenue with the service starting at 1:00 p.m.

Internment will be at Tallmadge Cemetery.
