Samuel Vechter, 84, passed away on September 29, 2022. Born in Akron, Ohio.
Sam lived in Akron till he joined the Navy. In the Navy, he traveled the world, where he met his wife, June, in Italy on a blind date. He was stationed in Connecticut and Virginia for many years. After serving twenty years, he retired as an E8. Sam moved his family back to Ohio, buying a small farm in Palmyra. He taught welding for years and worked as a welder in manufacturing plants before opening his bridge and fence company. Sam enjoyed spending time with his family and going fishing. Sam was a member of Deerfield American Legion Post 713 and served as Commander for many years. He was a Past District Commander for the American Legion 14th District. Sam was active in the Cleveland Fleet Reserve Association. He served as the secretary of the Palmyra Zoning Board for many years. He was involved in the volunteer committee for the Western Reserve Cemetery. Sam was a leader in setting up Four Chaplain services at area churches. He attended church at New Testament Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, June; parents, John and Helen Vechter; sisters Sue Scheffler, Helen Abell, and Millie Scarberry; and son-in-law David Wuest
Sam is survived by his son, John (Julie) Vechter, Mike (Rachel and children) Vechter; daughter, Elizabeth Wuest; grandsons, Christopher and Daniel Wuest; granddaughters, Teeny and Valerie Wassam; companion, Judy Bradley; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
The family is blessed to care for Sam this past year and is thankful for Mary Yoho's assistance in caring for him.
Visitation will be from 2:00–4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Donavan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (On the Historic Tallmadge Circle).
Visitation from 10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with funeral service immediately following on Monday, October 3, 2022, with Pastor Bob Burgess officiating.
The interment will be at Western Reserve Cemetery on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at 12:30 p.m.
